Mary Beth, who died in 2011, was a devout Christian who believed in a literal interpretation of Christianity.
She was the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Time magazine.
She became the first black woman to win an Emmy for her work in the film adaptation of her novel “Mary Beth and Me,” which was released in 1996.
